Annan Undergraduate Awards in Writing
The Margaret C. Annan Undergraduate Award in Writing is given annually for the best essay by a third-year College student, with recipients chosen by faculty committee.
Annan, who taught for many years at South Shore High School, received her Ph.B. in 1928 and her A.M. in 1933 from the University. She died in June 1993. The award was established by friends and former students of the University alumna.
“We feel that an award for writing is the proper way to honor a teacher who added so much to our intellectual lives,” said Judith Stein (A.B.’62, A.M.’64), a former student of Annan’s who helped establish the prize. “Because the Annan family had lived in Woodlawn since the turn of the century and the Annan clan attended the College of the University of Chicago, we thought the University would be an appropriate place to house the award.”
The intent of the prize is to help support the recipient while he or she develops the essay into a senior thesis.
