Summary

The 452d convocation was held on Friday, June 12, 1998, in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 1998, in Harper Quadrangle. Hugo F. Sonnenschein, President of the University, presided.

Two honorary degrees were conferred during the 452d convocation. The recipient of the Doctor of Science was J. Anthony Tyson, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Bell Laboratories. The recipient of the Doctor of Humane Letters was Harrison Colyar White, Giddings Professor of Sociology, Columbia University.

Five Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching were given, to Steven Levitt, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and the College; Joseph A. Piccirilli, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Chemistry, and Assistant Investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Allen R. Sanderson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics and the College, and Senior Research Scientist, National Opinion Research Center; Laura M. Slatkin, Associate Professor in the Department of Classical Languages & Literatures, the Committee on the Ancient Mediterranean World, and the College; and Stephen M. Stigler, the Ernest DeWitt Burton Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Statistics, the Committee on the Conceptual Foundations of Science, and the College.

Four Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching were given, to Lars Peter Hansen, the Homer J. Livingston Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Ecnomics and the College; Xiao-Li Meng, Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and the College; Ian Mueller, Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the College; and Janel M. Mueller, William Rainey Harper Professor in the College and the Department of English Language & Literature.

Jonathan Lear, the John U. Nef Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought, the Department of Philosophy, and the College, delivered the principal convocation address at the first, second, and third sessions, “Crossroads.”

Marvin Zonis, Professor in the Graduate School of Business, the Division of the Social Sciences, and the College, delivered the principal convocation address at the fourth session, “Taking Risks: Students and States.”

Jean Claude Monty, M.B.A.’70, President and Chief Executive Officer of BCE, Inc., and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bell Canada, delivered remarks at the fourth session.

Bachelor’s degree candidates’ remarks were given by Rohit Khanna, Mary-Lee Eileen Kimber, and Corrie Jean Watterson.
