Lawrence Furnstahl became the University’s Vice President for Financial Planning for Science in January 2009. He also serves as Chief Financial and Strategy Officer for the University of Chicago Medical Center. In announcing this new position, President Robert J. Zimmer wrote, “Lawrence will maintain his role in UCMC as his major focus, while he develops a general model for science funding, including basic operations and capital projects in the Physical Sciences Division and a financial model for molecular engineering. Lawrence will help to integrate general science financial planning with biomedicine as appropriate and also incorporate the national laboratories into our financial thinking.”

Furnstahl has over 25 years experience in strategic planning and financial management for academic medical centers and universities, including over 20 years as a chief financial officer. He served as Vice President and Treasurer of the University of Chicago Hospitals from 1987 to 1993, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the University from 1993 to 1997, and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of UCSF Stanford Health Care in northern California from 1997 to 1999. He returned to Chicago in 2000 as Chief Financial Officer, Chief of Strategic Development and Treasurer for the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, and since a governance restructuring in 2006, Chief Financial and Strategy Officer for the University’s Medical Center.

Furnstahl serves as a board member for two not-for-profit organizations in Hyde Park: the Hyde Park Art Center and Montgomery Place, a retirement community. He is a 1983 graduate of the College of the University of Chicago.
