The University of Chicago Quadrangles
During fiscal year 2008, the University of Chicago maintained and updated its historic Hyde Park campus while implementing the program of major building renovations and new construction developed through its master planning initiatives. The total operating expense for maintenance of the buildings and grounds was $36 million (excluding Medical Center–managed buildings). The University spent an additional $24 million to maintain and upgrade existing buildings and building components, including roofing, façade, electrical, and other major maintenance projects.
The American Institute of Architects recognized the architecture and landscaping of the University Quadrangles as one of 150 great places in Illinois. The citation notes, “The Quadrangles remain one of the country’s great expressions of the scholarly academic setting, which is remarkably cohesive despite more than a century of growth and change.”

Fiscal year 2008 saw the expansion and renovation of facilities on the south campus, including new utility infrastructure to support the expansion. On the west campus, new medical and physical sciences facilities are under construction or being planned, while renovations of main campus facilities mark the reuse or enhancement of older University facilities.
