Support for Teachers

Strong schools start with strong teachers.

Preparing City Teachers

The Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) prepares students to become successful teachers—and eventually teacher leaders—in urban elementary schools and high schools. A project of the Urban Education Institute, UTEP is a two-year academic program that leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree and teaching certification.

Strengthening Education in Math and Science

The Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education supports high-quality instruction and learning in mathematics and science. By conducting research, creating useful tools and programs, and providing direct support to school leaders and administrators, CEMSE seeks to improve and enhance mathematics and science instruction across the nation.

In addition, our Seminars for Elementary Specialists and Mathematics Educators (SESAME) program offers professional development courses for teachers in the Chicago Public Schools. And Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s oldest and largest national laboratories for science and engineering research, offers scientific learning opportunities to professionals and students of all ages.

Training in Area Studies

Several University programs give Chicago-area educators the resources they need to teach effectively about specific parts of the world.
