At the Forefront of Medicine

The University of Chicago Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in medicine. The Center regularly ranks among the nation’s best hospitals. Breakthrough discoveries have kept the Medical Center at the forefront of medicine since its founding in 1927, even as it maintains its deep commitment to the health and well-being of residents from around the region.

We offer a full range of programs, many free or low cost, designed to increase awareness of health issues and to improve the health of people all over the Chicago metropolitan area. In addition, we offer a variety of classes, screenings, and support groups—both on- and off-campus—to help you lead a healthy, happy life.

Improving Health Care Systems

The Medical Center also works to improve the way health care is delivered. Our Urban Health Initiative (UHI) connects patients to appropriate primary care providers within their communities, while supporting research into chronic health care problems that vex cities across the nation. A partnership between the Medical Center and community-based doctors, clinics, and hospitals, UHI is helping to create a more rational health care system in which patients can get the care they need, when they need it.
