Security Alert: May 8, 2012

Tuesday, May 8—Police are investigating two shooting incidents that have taken place near 61st Street in recent days, in an effort to determine if there is a connection or pattern emerging.

  • At approximately 1:50 p.m., Tuesday, May 8–A victim not affiliated with the University was shot in the leg by an unknown male while walking on the sidewalk on South Woodlawn Avenue, between 61st and 62nd Street. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.
  • At approximately 12:25 a.m., Saturday, May 5–An unknown person fired a weapon while walking on 61st Street near South Greenwood. No one was reported injured nor was property damage reported as a result.

As summer weather becomes more prevalent, the incidence of crime and gang-related activity often increases. Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Familiarize yourself with the location of University emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to the police by activating an emergency phone or by calling UCPD when you get to a safe location.
