Get Involved
Each year, hundreds of community members devote their time to the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they usher at concerts, visit hospital patients, cuddle babies, tutor, and much more.
Likewise, each year thousands of University students, faculty, and staff participate in an array of volunteer and service programs that enhance the health, skills, and well-being of all our neighbors. For example:
- The University Community Service Center connects students, faculty, staff, and residents with volunteer opportunities at organizations throughout the city.
- The University of Chicago Medical Center offers health screenings at neighborhood events and runs several free clinics in the community. Within the Medical Center, community and campus volunteers visit patients, deliver books and magazines, assist families, and more. In all, the Medical Center provides about $53 million in free medical care to more than 25,000 patients annually.
- The Neighborhood Schools Program places several hundred University students into classrooms for one-on-one tutoring and teacher support.
- At the Edwin F. Mandel Legal Aid Clinic, law students provide free legal services.
- Programs in the School of Social Service Administration and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies prepare students for lifelong engagement and service to the community.
