Diversity Leadership Awards

About the Awards
The Diversity Leadership Awards seek to recognize University staff members who display leadership in fostering diversity both on campus and within the surrounding community and to highlight, in concert with the University of Chicago Board of Governors, the contributions of alumni who advance the cause of justice and equality in our community and society.
Last year President Zimmer and the Diversity Leadership Council awarded the inaugural Diversity Leadership Awards at the beginning of the University’s weeklong recognition of the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Larry Hawkins, Director of Special Programs and College Preparation, won the 2009 Diversity Leadership Staff Award. James Hormel (J.D., '58) and Hedy Ratner (A.M., '74) shared the 2009 Diversity Leadership Alumni Award.

President Zimmer in the University’s Diversity Statement states:
“A commitment to diversity is central to our mission of discovery ... We have an obligation to see that the greatest variety of perspectives is brought to bear on the issues before us as scholars and citizens. We therefore celebrate our tradition of inclusion and recognize that our success as an institution depends on its ongoing renewal.”
Please support the University’s Diversity Statement by nominating a staff member or an alumna/us for a 2010 Diversity Leadership Award. In doing so, you help recognize those who fulfill our obligation to promote a University and society characterized by inclusiveness and diversity.
