The Jean Block Garden, behind the library, was a gift to the University by the friends and family of Jean Block, a noted Hyde Park historian. Designed as a viewing garden, the best vantage points of the sunken garden are from the large bay windows on the north side of the library. The plants were selected to tolerate both sun and shade conditions of a courtyard on the north side of a large building.
