Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago attended a reception at the Smart Museum on April 2, 2013, to honor recipients of the University of Chicago’s Police and Fire Scholarships. Nine students admitted to the College last fall received the full-tuition scholarships, which are available to children of Chicago police officers and firefighters.
The University began awarding the scholarships in 1976 to thank the Chicago Police and Fire Departments for their service to the community. The scholarships are now an important part of UChicago Promise, the University’s commitment to help students from the city of Chicago gain admission to, pay for, and thrive in college.
