UHI Day of Service

University of Chicago faculty, staff, students, and their family members volunteer for the Urban Health Initiative's Day

  • President of the Medical Center Sharon O’Keefe rallies the 240 faculty, employees, students and their families and friends as the group prepares to embark on their Day of Service and Reflection.

  • Participants eagerly await their Day of Service T-shirts and assignments to one of the 26 sites that were served May 18.

  • DOSAR is a multi-generational event that encourages families to teach their children the value of voluntary service. High school volunteers can also receive community service hours for Day of Service participation.

  • University of Chicago volunteers working along with community residents are an essential ingredient in the 11-year-old event’s success.

  • A team of painters worked at Prosperity House, a shelter for women reclaiming their lives in Woodlawn. Prosperity House Founder & CEO Beverly Davis joins in. Projects took place as far south as Greater Roseland on 104th Street and east to South Chicago.

  • Working together encourages communication.

  • There were plenty of weeds pulled at the 12 gardening sites visited by University of Chicago volunteers.
