Matthew Christian specializes in helping faculty think strategically about federal funding mechanisms, interdisciplinary team research, research program development, and preparations for site visits and other reviews.
As Assistant Vice President for Program Development, Christian works closely with faculty and other administrative leaders in the planning, initiation and management of large-scale research program initiatives and proposals. The scope of these responsibilities include collaborative University research efforts with Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Christian also serves as co-director of the Arete Initiative, a vehicle for coordination of research development efforts with staff colleagues in the Offices of Foundation and Corporate Relations and in broad collaboration with University faculty members. Arete provides expertise to faculty in research program conceptualization, proposal planning and development, and project management. To facilitate interdisciplinary research, Christian has also developed a number of technical, logistical and operational structures that help faculty start research involving complex scientific teams.
Christian joined the University of Chicago in 2006 after cofounding and launching OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., a biotech company formed to commercialize technology developed at the University of Illinois. From 2006 to 2010 he served as the Executive Administrator of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience. Christian did his undergraduate and graduate work at Valparaiso University and Yale University respectively. He held a research fellowship at the Ludwig-Maximillians Universität in Munich, Germany. Most recently, he earned a MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
