Lisa La Vallee

Director of Communications

Lisa is responsible for strategic communications planning and implementation for the Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories. Her primary responsibility is to communicate the impact and benefits of UChicago research and discovery, our close ties with Argonne and Fermilab, and our stewardship role as manager of both national laboratories. Lisa often serves as project manager on joint University/Lab communications initiatives.

Her responsibilities include internal and external communications for the office including announcements, stories, releases, social media, event planning, and website, collateral, and video development. Twice-yearly, Lisa plans and implements a joint speaker series event to help build connections between the University and Laboratory scientific communities. She manages and/or has contributed to the development of a number of internal websites, including University Research, Arete, Research Computing, UChicagoTech, UChicago Impact, the University’s Recovery Act website and other sites, and oversees editorial calendars, content and communication and marketing efforts as needed.

Lisa participates in a number of STEM education and outreach initiatives. She has served as head of the Media Programming Committee for Science Chicago (2008-2009) and led the university’s public programming efforts for the year-long event. She also coordinated the University’s participation in two of Argonne’s major Open Houses events. Lisa currently represents the University of Chicago on the Chicago Council on Science and Technology’s Board of Directors and contributes to federal and civic relations communications efforts.

Lisa joined the University in January, 2006. Previously, she managed internal communications, public relations, and analyst relations for the North American office of T-Systems, a $10 billion division of Deutsche Telekom; directed marketing and communications for information technology service provider Nuclio Corporation; was associate director of product management and marketing at SBC/Ameritech wholesale division and internal communications manager for Ameritech corporate; worked as an account manager for several national, consumer magazine publishers and was a media planner for D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (NYC).

Lisa received a B.A. in English with a writing emphasis from Santa Clara University and an M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications from Northwestern University. She also attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York for a year and sang in a couple of local rock bands back in the day.
