Michelle D. Terry, Director, Operations and Education Programs

Michelle’s responsibilities include operations, education programs, human resources and special projects. In collaboration with the Associate Vice President for National Laboratories, she is responsible for tracking and reporting management goals for Argonne’s Performance Evaluation and Measurement Plan. Michelle staffs the Argonne Board of Governors’ Compensation Committee on behalf of the UChicago Argonne, LLC and manages the process for joint appointments between the University, Argonne and Fermilab. Michelle reports to the Vice President for Research and National Laboratories. Additionally, she serves on a subcommittee of the University’s Diversity Leadership Council.

Michelle is accountable for ensuring and reporting the fulfillment of education commitments made by the University to the U.S. Department of Energy for Fermilab and Argonne. In this role she has oversight for the Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program, a customized, non-degree executive education program that Michelle helped to develop and establish for selected scientists and staff from Fermilab and Argonne. Also, Michelle co-chairs the Argonne Education Outreach Council which she helped establish. Michelle directs the Science and Technology Outreach and Mentoring Program (S.T.O.M.P), an after-school club led by a multidisciplinary staff of undergraduates, graduates and post-doctoral students. Additionally, Michelle helps to connect researchers to education outreach programs and University staff who can support their efforts.

At the start of her career in education, Michelle worked five years at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the department of Admissions and Aid. Later she worked for Baxter Healthcare as a senior marketing manager with international responsibilities for new product development, training and management. Prior to her return to higher education, Michelle worked at the North Shore Country Day School as a middle-school Spanish teacher and as the service-learning program director for the elementary and middle schools.

Michelle has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a B.S. in secondary education from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a part-time student at Northwestern University pursuing a master’s degree in organizational learning and performance with a focus on knowledge management and strategic processes.
