Through a number of tailored programs, the University of Chicago encourages intellectual synergies that support the strategic objectives of both Argonne and Fermilab. The University invests over $1 million annually to fund Strategic Collaborative Initiatives (SCIs) that include grants for collaborative research projects, strategic joint appointments, and joint institutes. SCIs provide flexibility to both Laboratories in developing promising programmatic areas in support of U.S. Department of Energy missions while simultaneously benefiting the scientific and educational missions of the University and the Laboratories.
Collaborative Seed Grants
Collaborative seed grants provide additional opportunities for collaboration between University researchers and scientists at Argonne and Fermilab to create more powerful research programs in areas that support the scientific priorities of both laboratories. The seed grant program allows the University to make ‘peer reviewed’ evaluations of–and grants to–early–stage basic research with the idea that they will grow into more ambitious programs that bring the three institutions closer together. Joint Appointments
The University is an active research partner with both Argonne and Fermilab. More than 120 faculty members, other academic personnel, and staff members have joint appointments between the University and Argonne. Fermilab and the University have approximately 13 joint appointments and affiliations.
Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program
The Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program (SLLP) is a non-degree, executive education program designed to enhance management and leadership skills of researchers and staff members who help lead and support some of the most massive, complex projects in modern science at Argonne and Fermilab.
In conjunction with the Laboratories, the program was developed by Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories, and the Executive Education Program at the Chicago Booth School of Business.
Booth faculty provide a curriculum that exposes program participants to best-in-practice tools and theories related to effective leadership, strategic thinking, and innovation and change.
UChicago faculty who collaborate with (or have interest in collaborating with) the Labs may also participate in the program. To learn more, please contact Michelle Horne-Terry. Read more
UChicago/Argonne/Fermilab Joint Speaker Series
In March 2010, The University of Chicago’s Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories, in collaboration with Argonne and Fermilab, launched a joint speaker series program for University faculty members and Argonne and Fermilab scientists, researchers, and engineers. The program, held twice a year, offers engaging speakers and topics, food and refreshments, and an enjoyable setting to encourage informal discussion and interaction among attendees. The program’s purpose is to encourage collaboration and further the research objectives of all three institutions.
