Welcome
The University is committed to working with the community and the Chicago Police Department to prevent crime and improve public safety in our community. The University of Chicago Police Department has more than 140 professionally trained officers with full police powers to serve University students and staff, as well as community members. In addition, the University partners with the city of Chicago as well as neighborhood organizations to improve transportation and other aspects of community life.
Whether you are a longtime resident or a newcomer to urban living, it is important to keep in mind that a level of responsibility for crime prevention and personal safety rests with each of us.

Security Alert
At 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, July 1 —A 28-year-old woman was shot in the arm by a man who accosted her on 63rd Street near Drexel, demanding money. The woman, who had just left a currency exchange, was reaching into her purse when the single shot was fired. The suspect fled on foot. The woman was transported to the hospital where she is being treated. Chicago Police and University of Chicago police are investigating.

Crime Prevention—Fraud
June 6, 2009—I want to inform you of fraudulent activity that has victimized members of the University community recently. At this time of year many members of the community advertise on-line to sub-let their apartments for the summer months. Recently, someone claiming to be from another country has responded to internet ads indicating they are coming to Chicago and are interested in sub-leasing.
