Center for Mechanical Excitability (CME)

The Center for Mechanical Excitability (CME) is a center of research founded by Dr. Eduardo Perozo in 2023. It has almost 20 participating labs from different departments of the University of Chicago, including Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Biophysical Sciences.
The center aims to reveal the principles of mechanotransduction—how life feels the world—, exploring how biological forces are sensed and transduced as part of physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Their research explores molecular principles of a wide range of phenomena, as mechanobiology plays a crucial role in nearly every fundamental process in biology (including the treatment of diseases such as metastatic cancer, hearing loss, cardiovascular disease, somatosensory, and musculoskeletal ailments).
The CME is to lead the development of the nascent discipline of mechanobiology using an advanced toolkit and collaborative research within the University of Chicago.
