Chicago Diabetes Research and Training Center

The mission of the Chicago Diabetes Research & Training Center (DRTC) is to promote new discoveries and enhance scientific progress by supporting cutting-edge basic and clinical research on the etiology of diabetes and its complications.

The DRTC was originally funded in 1977 as a Center solely based at the University of Chicago. Now, the DRTC includes principal investigators from all the major research institutions in the Chicago area with the goal to create a community of collaborative scholars that is unfettered by institutional boundaries. The DRTC has used its Pilot & Feasibility and Enrichment Programs, its Biomedical Research Core resources, leveraged multiple T32 awards, and advocated for institutional commitment and new faculty recruitment to create a diabetes research “ecosystem” in the Chicago area that has seen major growth in research output among established investigators and fostered the careers of junior investigators.
