N-12 Education

A transformative education from the start

As an institution that values rigorous inquiry, we recognize that developing the habits of mind that are foundational to a well-lived life begin long before college. That's why we operate N–12 schools on Chicago's South Side

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools

The Laboratory Schools are home to the youngest members of the University of Chicago’s academic community. For nearly 125 years, the Laboratory Schools have ignited and nurtured scholarship, curiosity, and creativity in students from nursery to 12th grade in a manner that emulates the core values of the University.

UChicago Charter School

The University operates three public charter school campuses within the Chicago Public Schools system, serving nearly 1,500 students on Chicago’s South Side. Together, the three campuses provide a pre-K through 12th-grade education aimed at cultivating students to become critical thinkers who are prepared for and succeed in four-year colleges and beyond.

Cease conceiving of education as mere preparation for later life, and make it the full meaning of the present life.

―John Dewey, founder of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
