The University of Chicago Annual Report

The University of Chicago Annual Report describes UChicago’s significant progress on a number of new initiatives over the last fiscal year, while providing an overview of our finances. These initiatives reflect a commitment to our enduring values of open and rigorous inquiry. At the same time they reflect the ambitions of the University community to see these values manifest in new and innovative ways.

College Publications

Publications from the College include Occasional Papers on Higher Education, a series of detailed essays on aspects of the University’s history written by Dean of the College John W. Boyer.

Lectures and Addresses

Aims of Education Addresses

Every year since 1961, a University of Chicago faculty member has been invited to address students in the College regarding his or her view on the aims of a liberal education. In 1962 the Aims of Education Address was added to Orientation Week and officially became a tradition for incoming students. The address encourages students to reflect on the purpose and definition of education as they embark upon their collegiate years.

Convocation Addresses

Since the beginning, the convocation addresses at the University of Chicago have shown a persistent focus on issues of substance rather than benign, and perhaps occasionally welcomed, advice for graduating students. Each address is, in one way or another, about the power of ideas and the central, essential place they hold at the University. Since 1970, all convocation addresses have been given by members of the University faculty.

The Nora and Edward Ryerson Lectures

The annual Ryerson Lecture grew out of a 1972 bequest to the University by Nora and Edward L. Ryerson, a former Chairman of the Board. The faculty selects each Ryerson Lecturer based on a consensus that a particular scholar has made research contributions of lasting significance. In return, the Ryerson Lecturer is asked to reflect on his or her intellectual life and work.

Chancellor Zimmer’s Speeches and Publications

Chancellor Robert J. Zimmer is the author of two books,Ergodic Theory and Semisimple Groups(1984) andEssential Results of Functional Analysis(1990), and more than 80 mathematical research articles. Prior to his appointment as Former President, Zimmer was a University of Chicago faculty member and administrator for more than two decades specializing in the mathematical fields of geometry, particularly ergodic theory, Lie groups, and differential geometry.

Reports

Reports on University Disciplinary Actions

Annually, the Council of the University Senate asks Campus and Student Life to provide a report of all student disciplinary proceedings, as required by actions taken by the Council on May 23, 1970, and June 8, 1976. Reports covering 2007–08 to the present are available at Reports on University Disciplinary Actions. Reports covering 1999–2000 to 2006–07 are available in the University of Chicago Record Archive.

The Reports page of the Office of the Provost includes quick links to frequently consulted reports, along with an extensive archive of reports from faculty and administrative committees, documents related to major University initiatives, and official announcements and statements.

Reports of the Independent Review Committee for the University of Chicago Police Department

The Independent Review Committee for the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) examines complaints against the UCPD that allege abusive language, dereliction of duty, excessive force, or violation of rights. Composed of faculty members, staff, students, and members of the community, the committee reviews the UCPD’s internal investigations, and reports its conclusions and recommendations to the University administration and the wider community in an annual report.

The University of Chicago Record

The University of Chicago Record published official University reports, policies, addresses, including convocation and Aims of Education addresses, and more. The most recent series appeared from 1967 to 2008. Issues from 2000 to 2008 are available in the University of Chicago Record Archive. The University of Chicago Campus Publications archives issues from 1967 to 1981. Two previous series, published from 1896 to 1908 and from 1915 to 1933, are available in the University Library.
